Formulation Philosophy

What Isn’t In Our Products

A more intentional approach to formulation.

There’s a difference between removing ingredients for the sake of simplicity — and choosing not to include what isn’t needed.

At Bright Leaf Works, our formulations are shaped as much by what we leave out as by what we include.

Not to follow trends. Not to meet expectations. But to create products that feel closer to their source.

What You Won’t Find Here

We choose our ingredients carefully — and just as importantly, we choose what to leave out.

Our formulations are made without:

  • Synthetic preservatives
  • Artificial fragrances and synthetic fragrance oils
  • Artificial colourants and FD&C dyes
  • Harsh detergents like Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)
  • Petroleum-derived fillers such as mineral oil or petrolatum
  • Silicones like dimethicone
  • Parabens
  • Phthalates

Not to remove for the sake of removing — but to make space for what matters.

No Synthetic Preservation Systems

Many products depend on preservation systems to support water-heavy formulations and long shelf life.

We take a different approach.

Our products are designed to:

  • Use little to no added water where possible
  • Rely on stable oils, butters, and waxes
  • Be made in small batches for freshness

This allows us to avoid synthetic preservation systems while maintaining quality and consistency.

Scent, As It Comes From Nature

Fragrance can define a product — but it can also overpower it.

We don’t use synthetic fragrance oils.

Instead, scent is shaped through:

  • Essential oils
  • Botanical infusions
  • The natural aroma of the ingredients themselves

The result is often more subtle, more grounded, and more reflective of the formulation as a whole.

Colour From Minerals and Botanicals

Rather than relying on artificial dyes, we work with what naturally exists.

Clays, plant powders, and infusions bring colour in a way that:

  • Varies slightly from batch to batch
  • Reflects the ingredients used
  • Feels connected to the product itself

No two batches are exactly the same — and that’s part of the character.

Rooted In Traditional Knowledge

Before modern formulations, skincare was built from oils, butters, and botanicals in their whole forms.

That foundation still matters.

We draw from traditional approaches — then refine them:

  • Adjusting ratios for balance and feel
  • Improving texture for everyday use
  • Creating products that fit into modern routines

It’s not about recreating the past. It’s about carrying forward what works.

A Different Kind Of Product Experience

When unnecessary elements are left out, something else becomes more noticeable:

  • The texture of oils and butters
  • The subtlety of botanicals
  • The way a product settles into the skin

It’s not about intensity. It’s about clarity.

What Remains Matters

By choosing what not to include, we create space for ingredients that:

  • Serve a clear purpose
  • Work in balance with one another
  • Bring both function and character
